Hi Drury students and families,
We’re pleased to announce that we are re-opening enrollment for session 1 of our 21st Century programming. A full list of programs and descriptions can be found at the bottom of this email.
We’re also soliciting input from students! We’re excited to develop new programs with students who have ideas and/or want to lead programs! Additionally, we’re reaching out to 7th and 8th grade students with the help of our Drury interns who are helping to design, outreach and market programs.
If you have program ideas or if you’re interested in signing up for a current program, you can contact Kate Merrigan at kmerrigan@napsk12.org or Ashley Mirante at amirante@napsk12.org.
As a reminder, the 21st Century program is not a drop-in program but with our updated policy, students can enroll at any time.
To accommodate our new registration policy, we’ve updated our bus route. The new bus route is a hybrid of our current route and the late bus route for newly enrolled students. Students can use the bus at any time (which again, is an update to our program). Updated bus routes can be found here.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Program Director, Kate Merrigan at kmerrigan@napsk12.org or Site Lead, Ashley Mirante at amirante@napsk12.org.
Current Session 1 Programs:
Vocal Ensemble (Chorus)(Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays): This entry-level chorus class is designed for students with an interest in singing. Students will explore the fundamentals of singing, including proper vocal technique, breath control, pitch matching, and basic music reading skills. Through a variety of choral repertoire—ranging from classical to contemporary—students will learn to perform in unison and in simple harmony as part of a vocal ensemble. Emphasis will be placed on developing listening skills, teamwork, and confidence in performance. Opportunities for concerts and school events will allow students to showcase their progress and celebrate the joy of singing together. Students can choose to come to one, two, or all three days each week depending on their needs and still stay caught up.
New Ways of Drawing (Wednesdays): A 2D class investigating how we can experiment with how we see and record the world around us. Our projects will include drawing from our senses, drawing from movement and creating our own sketchbooks. Using a variety of drawing materials such as pencil, pastels and paint, we will work in pairs, as a group and have solo working time on potential long term projects.
Greenagers (Tuesdays(: Do you love food?! Do you care about the environment and want to make a difference? In the Greenagers Cook, Farm, and Food Justice afterschool program we will be cooking, farming, and taking field trips to understand where food comes from, where it goes, and how our community is addressing food access and food insecurity. We will learn hands-on skills in the kitchen, in the garden, and get a chance to explore and take care of our local community and land! This program is in connection with the Greenagers at Many Forks Farm summer program and will meet Tuesday afternoons.
Cooking (Mondays: Spend Monday afternoons in the kitchen learning to bake, cook and create on a budget. Enjoy the added benefit of sharing creations with friends.
Role Playing Games (RPG)(Fridays): Have you ever watched a movie and said "If I was the hero I would have...."? Do you want to slay monsters and tell an epic story? Or do you just want to come and joke around while rolling dice to see who shoots an arrow into a ceiling? Whatever your answers are to these questions you have a place at the table during our After School RPG program. During this program you are given the opportunity to work collaboratively with your Game Master and other players to tell a story that matters, that deals with problems and overcomes them. Roll some dice, slay some monsters, tell a story (even if you roll a one).
Magic: The Gathering (Thursdays): Ever wanted to learn how to play a trading card game? In this program, you can! Compete with your friends and classmates in Magic: The Gathering, a strategy game using a wide variety of interesting cards. No cards necessary, we'll provide them for you!
