Greetings Drury Community,

In collaboration with schools across Berkshire County, DHS Art students contributed to the Hexagon Mural Project coordinated by Stephanie Graham, Art Teacher of Mount Everett Regional School. The installation of the mural is underway and a celebratory opening will be happening this Friday, October 7th 1:00 - 3:00pm at the Gazebo behind the Town Hall.

The county-wide mural will be on display throughout the weekend and is the starting point for Indigenous Peoples’ Day: Ceremonial Walk on Main Street in Great Barrington happening Monday, October 10, 11am at 334 Main St. Great Barrington. If you are in South County this weekend, enjoy our students' work in person! If you are unable to attend in person, please visit our school’s online gallery: DHS Online Art Gallery to view work made public through parental permission.

In creating their personal hexagon, students learned a brief history of the native land encompassing Drury High School with a focus on the history of the Stockbridge-Munsee band of Mohicans. Students responded to the prompt, ‘Connection’ using dry art materials and their own personal perspective. Guiding questions throughout the learning experience were, ‘How do we foster empathy? How do we instill in ourselves and others stewardship of the land? What does feeling connected to the land and to others mean to us?’

Thank you for checking out our students’ work!

Kindly,

Amanda Hartlage
